A lightweight Windows app for moving or copying files between folders: filter by file type, skip anything matching a keyword, and optionally sweep the leftovers into the Recycle Bin, all in one click instead of sorting things by hand.
- Filter by file type: comma-separated, dots optional, so
mp4, .mkv, aviall work the same - Exclude by keyword: any file whose name contains one of your keywords gets skipped (capitalization doesn't matter), handy for weeding out
sample, trailer, orprooffiles - Move or copy: a straight toggle; copying preserves original timestamps
- Keep or flatten folder structure: recreate the source's subfolders at the destination, or dump every matching file into one folder regardless of how deeply it was buried
- Optional leftover cleanup: sweep everything that wasn't transferred into the Recycle Bin, along with any folders left empty. Copied files still remain in the source folder
- Multiple named profiles: save different setups (e.g. "Downloads → Plex," "Camera Dump," "Screenshots") and switch between them instantly
- Preview: shows every change that will happen before you hit Run, including what gets transferred, what gets skipped, and what gets deleted
- Progress, pause, and cancel: a progress bar that keeps moving even during one big file, so you always know how far along it is. Pause and resume whenever, and cancelling partway deletes the half-finished file it was writing
- Matches Windows automatically: detects your system's light/dark mode and themes the whole app to match, title bar included
- Remembers your profiles and settings between sessions
Grab the latest release from the Releases page.
- Installer: installs to Program Files with a Start Menu shortcut, and uninstalls cleanly from Settings → Apps
- Portable: a single exe, no installation. Run it from anywhere, including a USB drive
Your saved profiles live in %APPDATA%\File Mover\, independent of where the app itself is, so they carry over regardless of which version you use.
Requirements: Windows 10 or 11 (64-bit).
Both downloads are unsigned, so Windows SmartScreen will show a "Windows protected your PC" warning the first time you run one. Click More info → Run anyway.
- Pick your Source folder and Destination folder with the Browse buttons
- Enter the file types you want to transfer (e.g.
mkv, mp4) and any exclude keywords (e.g.sample, trailer) - Choose Move or Copy, then whether to keep or flatten the folder structure
- Leave cleanup on Keep leftover files unless you specifically want the source emptied out
- Click Preview to see exactly what would happen: every file that would transfer, be skipped, or be deleted
- Click Run when it looks right. Pause and Cancel are available while it works
- Use New / Save As... / Rename / Delete at the top to manage multiple profiles
Switching cleanup to Delete leftover files means that after the transfer, everything still sitting in the source folder (anything that didn't match your file types, plus anything an exclude keyword skipped) gets sent to the Recycle Bin, along with any folders left empty.
A few deliberate safeguards:
- Files go to the Recycle Bin, so recovery is a right-click away
- In copy mode, the files you just copied are protected, so copying can't quietly behave like moving
- Enabling the option pops a warning, and Preview lists every file it would delete before you run anything
- Some locations have no Recycle Bin, like network shares and many USB drives. Those files are left alone and an error is logged
- To clean them up anyway, tick "If a folder has no Recycle Bin, delete permanently instead." It's off by default and warns you before it turns on
